Scientific Assistant (Doctoral position) in Atmospheric Physics Thema: Airborne measurement and interpretation of peroxy radical concentrations in the Asian free troposphere with a focus on oxidation mechanisms in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere Position: PhD student E13 TV-L (50%) Duration: 3 years to begin immediatly Project description: Knowledge about peroxy radical concentrations is essential for improving our understanding of the oxidative capacity of the troposphere. These very reactive trace gases play an important role in the production and depletion of tropospheric ozone. The Institute of Environmental Physics and Remote Sensing (IUP/IFE), University of Bremen (http:// www.iup.uni-bremen.de<http://%20www.iup.uni-bremen.de/>), has a long standing experience in the development of measurement methods of the measurement of trace gases and in the investigation of the role of peroxy radicals in the mechanisms of formation and depletion of ozone in the troposphere. Within the HALO- SPP (DFG Schwerpunktprogramm 1294: Atmosphärenforschung mit dem Forschungsflugzeug HALO http://www.halo.dlr.de/) a new airborne instrument based on laser spectroscopy (PeRCEAS: Peroxy Radical Chemical Enhancement and Absorption Spectrometer) was developed and characterised for the measurement of peroxy radicals. PeRCEAS will participate in the measurement campaign of the HALO scientific mission OMO (Oxidation mechanisms observations in the extratropical free troposphere) in Asia in summer 2015. One of the scientific objectives is the investigation of convective processes in the budget of reactive oxidative species in upper tropospheric layers. The IUP/IFE is seeking a suitable candidate for the participation in the deployment of the instrument in testing and campaign flights, the data interpretation and the publication of results. Requirements * Successful diploma/masters in physics, chemistry or related disciplines * Experience in lab and/or field measurements * Working knowledge of data acquisition and validation software (DTVee, Matlab or similar) are desirable * Working knowledge of atmospheric physics and chemistry and electronics is advantageous * Applicants should preferably have a very good knowledge of English.
