Climate Researcher (Research Associate) 55022 –Part-Time 0.5 FTE

Starting salary is normally in the range £25,513 to £27,864

Fixed-term for 19 Months

The working group of Meteorology and Climate within the School of
Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, is looking for a scientific
researcher interested in contributing to the group's current research
focus on meteorological and climatological extreme events.

Current activities include research on observed and simulated dynamic
processes relevant for the generation of extreme events, the analysis of
statistical characteristics, diagnostics of global and regional model
simulation and the assessment of related impacts.

The working environment includes an excellent network of cooperation
within the School, the University of Birmingham, and with national and
international scientific and operational institutions.

The position holder will work for the project SeaStoC (Seasonal
Extra-tropical Storm Clustering). The project will address the business
relevant question of increased frequency of occurrence of severe, damage
prone extra-tropical cyclone systems per season. The focus is laid on
European winter wind storms as the dominating natural hazard for
(re)insurance business in Europe.

Skills and Experience:

BSc / MSc in Meteorology, or a neighboring discipline with experience in
meteorology and climate sciences.

Experience in meteorological data analysis (in particular extreme value
analysis, statistics); scientific programming skills; knowledge of
dynamic meteorology; writing of scientific publications; teaching at
university level, including supervision of BSc and MSc theses.
