Post-doctoral researcher position available:   modelling of aerosol-cloud interactions
at Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science, Lund University, Sweden

The current vacancy is within the atmospheric modelling group in Lund University and will involve the development and application of numerical models for the simulation of clouds and cloud systems. Models are developed and run on Linux platforms. The main development language is FORTRAN, while processing of output is done with MATLAB as well as scripting languages. The research group maintains its own Linux cluster but also uses other HPC facilities, such as those offered by LUNARC ( The research group of Dr Phillips at Lund University has a strong track record in creating new cloud models and applying them to tackle problems related to severe weather, cloud glaciation, lightning and mechanisms for aerosol effects on cold clouds.

The researcher will study the microphysics of glaciated clouds with a high-resolution model. The modeling for the position will be a link between our detailed high-resolution aerosol-cloud models and the climate models. There will be a sequence of tasks:- (i) improved representation of mixed-phase microphysics in our cloud models and their validation; (ii) creation of codes for large-scale models; and (iii) sensitivity studies with the models concerning ice-phase processes of precipitation production. The position will be at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science at Lund University and will be for a period of 11 months in 2014/2015.

Requirements for the position include:- a PhD degree in atmospheric science; a bachelors or Masters degree in a numerical scientific area, such as physics, engineering or maths; examined proficiency in mathematics while at university; documented other qualifications in natural sciences; documented programming skills and experience in the Fortran and Matlab programming languages; and experience in creation of aspects of numerical models, such as process parameterizations. Knowledge of cloud microphysics and aerosol science is advantageous. The applicant should have fluency in English. Knowledge of Swedish is not required.

Full details for the application are given at For more information, contact Dr Phillips at
