Post-doc position - Research assistant

The Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology (IGMK) at the University of Cologne in Germany is seeking
candidates for the position of research assistant in meteorology. This temporary Post-doc position is available in the recently established research group led by Prof. Dr. Roel A. J. Neggers. The research focuses on the development and evaluation of scale-adaptive parameterizations of moist convective boundary-layer processes for general circulation models.

We are seeking an applicant with a strong background in the numerical modelling of turbulence, convection and clouds in the coupled boundary-layer-soil system, with an emphasis on model development and evaluation. The appointed applicant is expected to conduct scientific research on these topics, with ample freedom to pursue topics of personal interest. The second main duty is to support the research group by means of i) teaching, ii) supervision of students, and iii) maintenance of the infrastructure for process-level model simulation and evaluation that is operated by the research group.

Applicants should recently have obtained a PhD title in a field of natural science relevant to the numerical modelling of atmospheric flow. These may include (but are not limited to) meteorology, oceanography, (geo)physics, and mathematics. Previous experience with numerical models of geophysical flow, in particular Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and Single-Column Model (SCM) simulation, is considered a strong advantage.

The application package should include
  • an up-to-date CV,
  • publication and teaching records,
  • a cover letter describing the background, training and research interests of the applicant,
  • copies of relevant certificates,
  • the names of three referees who are familiar with your work (please ask them to send their reference letters to us directly).
More detailed information about the position and about the IGMK are available in the attached pdf, and at http://gop.meteo.uni-koeln-de/~neggers under 'Vacancies'. The application package should be sent to Prof. Neggers (neggers@meteo.uni-koeln.de). The deadline for application is 8 June 2014.
