Post-doctoral fellowship at CNRM (CNRM-GAME, UMR 3589 - METEO-FRANCE, CNRS)

Applications are invited for a 22-month postdoctoral position starting as soon
as possible in 2014, in the climate department of the CNRM-GAME in Toulouse
(France) to work on the following subject: "Modelling and evaluation of
simulations and reanalyses of continental surfaces”. The deadline for
application is May 31th 2014.

Framework:

This position is funded by the European Commission through the Earth2Observe
FP7 project. The ultimate objective of this project is to improve the knowledge
on the past state of continental surfaces through the reanalysis of land
observations with land surface numerical models. In EartH2Observe, Meteo-France
intends to build and validate a global land data assimilation system coupled
with a hydrological model and to contribute to the validation of land surface
models and Earth Observations products.

Work description:

The proposed work will mainly consist in the following tasks :

1) Contribute to the evaluation and intercomparison of the simulation and
analysis of snow conditions produced by the different partners of EartH2Observe
(design of the intercomparison method, processing of snow observations,
evaluation of model ouputs;
2) Perform global simulations with SURFEX-TRIP, the land surface model of the
CNRM, and contribute to the evaluations of the results against in-situ river
discharges, global snow cover, carbon and vegetation products, and terrestrial
water storage variations estimates by GRACE.
3) Analyse performances of new physics or modules in the SURFEX-TRIP system.

Required qualifications:

1) A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, preferentially in the modelling of land
surface conditions at global or regional scales.
2) A practice in basic statistical methods.
3) An experience in the linux operating system, in the netcdf file format, and
Fortran90.
4) A good practice in French and/or English languages.

Practical information:

The successful applicant will be contracted by Météo-France and will be based
at the “Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques” (Toulouse, France;
http://www.cnrm.meteo.fr/) within the climate research group. The opened
position will start as soon as possible in 2014 for a 22-month duration. The
net salary will be between 2600 to 3100 euros per month, depending on the
qualifications of the candidate.

For full consideration, an application letter including a detailed statement of
research interest, along with a curriculum vitae (including research
experience, publications and conferences, computing skill and different
language practises) and the names, telephone and email address of 2 referees
should be sent by email before May 31st 2014 to:
