The Chair of Ecoclimatology invites applications for two Ph.D. positions within
the project “Climate change and seasonality – Changes in annual cycles and
extremes in atmosphere and biosphere at alpine observatories”.

1. Seasonality and influence of vegetation on CO2 concentrations, δ13C /
hydrogen isotopic signature and climatic extremes at the UFS
The focus of this subproject is on data analysis and maintenance of the isotope
facilities at the Umwelt Forschungsstation Schneefernerhaus (environmental
research station, UFS, Zugspitze).
Duties include:
- Operation of isotope facilities (CRDS) at the UFS
- Validation, analysis and modeling of collected data for CO2 concentrations
and isotope ratios
- Statistical analysis of long time series of abiotic and biotic indices of the
vegetation period with modern multivariate methods from extreme value
statistics

2. Characterization of the vegetation period in the Alps using remote sensing
data and abiotic/biotic indicators
This subproject focuses on changes, extremes and variations in the length of
the vegetation period under climate change.
Duties include:
- Analysis of ground data (webcams, observations) of vegetation period length
- Analysis of remote sensing data (e.g. MODIS, RapidEye, Landsat Data
Continuity Mission)
- Internship at the EURAC in Bozen

The ideal candidate
- has graduated with high success from a Master or equivalent program (for
position 1, e.g. meteorology, physics, geosciences, environmental engineering,
ideally with a background in chemistry of the atmosphere and maintenance of
scientific measuring equipment, for position 2, e.g. geoinformatics, geography,
geoecology, forest sciences, with a background in remote sensing)
- is interested in and eligible for working scientifically
- is both self-reliant and creative, but also a team-player on project level
- is computer literate (MS Office, statistical software, preferably R) and
holds basic skills in at least one programming language; for position 2, a
background in remote sensing software and analyses of remote sensing data is
required
- has excellent communication skills in English
- has a strong interest in publishing results in international and
peer-reviewed journals and in timely doctoral graduation

The offered positions are paid at the TV-L 13 (65%) level for three years.
The successful candidates will join a very active research group at the Chair
of Ecoclimatology of the Technische Universität München at the Campus
Freising-Weihenstephan. Freising is an endearing and livable university town 35
km north-west of Munich, and is easily accessible by plane, train and car.

Your application
Please send your digital application to Mrs. Fleischner
(fleischner@forst.wzw.tum.de) including
(1) A short letter of motivation
(2) Curriculum vitae
