Two PhD positions in planetary atmosphere modeling

Two 3-year positions are available with the International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science (IMPRS) at Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research ( We are seeking highly motivated PhD students to work on two projects.

One project is on developing the state-of-the-art general circulation model of Jupiter's stratosphere, an atmospheric layer that extends for more than 350km above the visible cloud top. It includes an implementation of the new radiation code, studying physics, dynamics and their interactions on this giant gas planet. This work will be done in conjunction with the preparation for the JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission.

The second project is on application of a comprehensive Mars general circulation model to studying dynamics and vertical coupling in the atmosphere of our red neighbor. Mars is the second best known planet after Earth. Understanding its atmospheric dynamics is equally important for further Mars exploration as well as revealing fundamental processes on the terrestrial-like planets. A significant part of the work will be on performing numerical simulations and their validation with observational data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft, which is set to arrive to the Mars orbit in September 2014.

Qualified candidates must have completed a Master's Degree in physics, mathematics, meteorology or equivalent. The ideal candidate should be interested in atmospheric science, in applying analytical and computational mathematical methods, have a familiarity and/or experience with numerical modeling, and good programming skills. Proficiency in FORTRAN and some familiarity with multiprocessing would be a great asset. Good knowledge of English (written and spoken) to work in our international environment is required.

Consideration of candidates will begin immediately, and last until the position is filled. Inquiries and applications (CV stating your education experience and interests) should be sent to Dr. Paul Hartogh (, and/or Dr. Alexander Medvedev (
