The Chair for Regional Climate and Hydrology of the University of Augsburg, Germany, in close cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Campus Alpin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, offers a PostDoc/Senior Scientist Position (m/f) in "Geostatistical Analysis and Copula-Based Data Merging Algorithms for a Stochastic Quantification of Precipitation Fields" within the framework of the DFG Research Unit "Data Assimilation for Improved Characterization of Fluxes Across Compartmental Interfaces (FOR2131)". Starting date is 1.4.2014 and the duration of the position initially is for 3 years. The DFG Research Unit FOR2131 is led by the University of Bonn and sets out to design and install a data assimilation framework for catchment-scale terrestrial systems encompassing all compartments from the groundwater to the atmosphere including soil, vegetation, and river networks. Observations to be assimilated into a physically-based simulation platform of the terrestrial system encompass groundwater levels, in-situ soil moisture, river levels and discharge, turbulent fluxes and other micrometeorological observations, in-situ and radar-based precipitation, and brightness temperatures from satellites, amongst others. Within FOR2131, the project P3 "Geostatistical Analysis and Copula-Based Data Merging Algorithms for a Stochastic Quantification of Precipitation Fields“ focuses on stochastic rainfall reconstruction from different measurement types, like gauges, microwave links and Radar information. We seeka PostDoc with an excellent master and PhD degree in mathematics, meteorology, hydrology, physics, geo-ecology, environmental science, environmental engineering or related subjects. Extensive skills in hydrometeorology and geostatistics are expected; experience in Copula theoryis beneficial. It is expected that the candidate closely cooperates with the other scientists in the Research Unit and international research groups.
