Storm Clustering over Europe

Intense extra-tropical storms are a major weather hazard affecting Europe. Under particular large-scale atmospheric conditions, several storms may affect Europe within a short time period, in some cases severely affecting a particular area or country, like the UK and Ireland in the current winter. The occurrence of such cyclone families leads to large socio-economic impacts and cumulative losses.

Within the scope of the SCENARIO NERC DTP (http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/nercdtp/home), a NERC Industrial CASE studentship is available for a PhD project in Storm Clustering over Europe. This project is collaboration between the University of Reading (Joaquim Pinto, Helen Dacre, Len Shaffrey) and Aon Benfield Impact Forecasting (www.impactforecasting.com). Impact Forecasting is Aon Benfield’s (leading reinsurance broking company) catastrophe model development centre, focusing on building probabilistic and scenario risk models that cover a variety of physical perils, including extreme tropical and extra-tropical storms. This project aims to analyse the large-scale atmospheric dynamics associated with the occurrence of clusters of storms affecting Western Europe. In particular, the representation of clustering in climate models and possible changes under future climate conditions will be assessed. This project will use state-of-the-art climate models to address these questions to enable a better quantification of climate change impacts and associated uncertainties for Europe not only in meteorological but also in socio-economic terms. The project will include extended stays with Aon Benfield Impact Forecasting (London office) and possibilities to interact with key stakeholders in the insurance industry.
