PhD opportunities in Climate System Science

Deadline: January 31 (international applicants).

Deadline: March 31 (Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents).

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science is an international research consortium of five Australian universities (The University of New South Wales, Monash University, The University of Melbourne, The University of Tasmania and The Australian National University) and a suite of outstanding national and international Partner Organizations.

Research is particularly focused in the following five areas:

·         The effects of tropical convection on Australia’s climate.

·         Risks, mechanisms and the attribution of changes in Australian climate extremes.

·         The role of land surface forcing and feedbacks for regional climate.

·         Drivers of spatial and temporal variability in extratropical Australia.

·         Mechanisms and attribution of past and future ocean circulation change.

We offer graduate opportunities with world leading climate scientists. Many projects are supervised across universities and/or co-supervised by experts from the CSIRO, Bureau of Meteorology or one of our international partners.

Outstanding students may receive top-up funding above the rates of standard Australian government PhD scholarships (currently ~$25k/year).

Generous travel support exists for students to visit our international partners.

We currently offer at least three $10,000 PhD top-up scholarships for projects that focus specifically on climate or weather model development. Students may be based at any university in the ARC Centre of Excellence although this will depend on where Centre expertise is focused.

Expressions of interest are encouraged in any area of the Centre’s research focus, for examples of projects available see: <>).
