The SCENARIO DTP has been awarded 12 PhD STUDENTSHIPS, fully-funded by
NERC, for entry in October 2014. In addition, 3 STUDENTSHIPS funded by
the NERC Industrial CASE scheme are available. Funding includes a
stipend of £13726 per year, payment of fees, training plus travel and
subsistence at fieldwork and conferences. Full-funding is only available to students from the UK, and other EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for 3 years. Funding without the stipend is available to all EU citizens.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 31 January 2014

Projects offered by the SCENARIO DTP are based at the University of
Reading, the University of Surrey, the NERC Centre for Ecology and
Hydrology (CEH) or the British Geological Survey (BGS).

The scientific scope of SCENARIO is broad, spanning the physical,
chemical and biological processes operating in the Earth system,
including atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and terrestrial components.
There are projects involving fieldwork, computer modelling,
theoretical/mathematical development and laboratory studies. SCENARIO
seeks to attract high-quality graduates (with BSc or MSc) from science,
mathematics, engineering and physical geography degrees.

APPLICATIONS ARE ENCOURAGED FROM STUDENTS COMPLETING DEGREES IN
MAINSTREAM SCIENCE SUBJECTS (PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY),
MATHEMATICS AND GEOGRAPHY WITH OR WITHOUT AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ELEMENT. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE OFFERS EXCITING PROSPECTS AND IS AN EXPANDING AREA IN BUSINESS AND RESEARCH SEEKING PEOPLE WITH POSTGRADUATE SKILLS.

Many of the projects involve partners from industry or public sector
organisations, such as the Met Office, offering co-supervision and time
on placement in industry. Some have additional support from the industry partners through the CASE sponsorship scheme.

There are opportunities for SCENARIO students to work abroad at one of
our 3 international partners: the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (CalTech),
University of Oklahoma and University of Hamburg.

SCENARIO will provide PhD training ranging from in-depth disciplinary
underpinning science, to projects that explore and deepen the links
between disciplines. It will develop your skills in environmental
sciences by exploiting diverse training opportunities including:
subject-specific courses (MSc-level modules), high performance
computing, fieldwork, laboratory work, professional development and
short team-work courses.
