Postdoc Position (m/f)

code no. 2014/CSC 1

The place of employment is Hamburg.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near
Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more
information at http://www.hzg.de <http://www.hzg.de/>.

The Climate Service Center (CSC); an institution of the
Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a 3 year Postdoc
Position (m/f),starting March 1^st , 2014, as part of the Norwegian,
Indian, German joint research activity GLACINDIA. The primary objective
of GLACINDIA is to produce updated and scientifically robust data on
water related effects of changes in mass balance of glaciers and river
runoff, aiming at reducing uncertainties in the region of Western
Himalaya. This will be achieved by a combination of field data and
measurements coupled with climate downscaling and modelling of glacier
mass balance and model experiments at two glaciers in NW Himalaya,
India. The project will further contribute to the understanding of the
potential impact of climate changes on glaciers and glacier-fed rivers
in the region. A focus is set to the effective and targeted
dissemination of the results to governmental agencies and stakeholders.

The open position is based at the CSC in Hamburg, however several visits
to the study region and to other places for scientific workshops and
project/stakeholder meetings will be necessary within the project phase.

The successful candidate at the CSC will conduct and analyse regional
climate simulations with the regional climate model REMO for today’s and
future climate conditions. For these simulations REMO will be used in a
configuration with and without a dynamical glacier scheme. Furthermore
the successful candidate will be responsible for the development of new
tools in order to tailor the project results to the needs of users and
stakeholders in the region.

The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in an appropriate
discipline and has experience in the field of regional or global
modelling of the climate or earth system. The candidate has to be
familiar with the analysis of large data sets. Knowledge in appropriate
software tools such as Python, R, Fortran and experience with Linux/Unix
computer environments are essential. Moreover, the candidate should have
an interest beyond the pure scientific analysis of data and processes as
the project also aims at a strong interaction between research and
stakeholders. Experience in the work with stakeholders preferably from
the study region would be a clear advantage. The willingness for
frequent travel activities to take part in project meetings, workshops
and conferences is essential. Finally, excellentwritten and oral
communication skills in English are expected, as well as a record of
peer reviewed publications in order to demonstrate the skill to publish
the work in scientific journals and the willingness to work in an
international and interdisciplinary team.
