Background

The Royal Meteorological Society is the UK’s professional and learned Society for Weather and Climate, and is respected around the world for its contribution to meteorology. The Society is a charity and its programmes of work include providing professional accreditation, developing educational resources and skills, producing scientific publications, holding public and professional meetings and events, giving advice to Government and policy makers, and a growing role in providing information to the public on the science of weather and climate change.

 

The Public Engagement Programme Manager is an important role within the Society. It reflects the Society desire to conduct an active programme of engagement and communication activities that deliver significant public benefit by making available high quality information on weather and climate, fostering popular interest in the weather and promoting the important role that meteorology has in people’s lives. This role will work across the Society and collaborate strongly with the Head of Education, the Events and Outreach Officer, the Head of IT and Technical Service, and the Head of Education.

Main Responsibilities

The following outlines the main areas of work that this role will be involved in:

     plan and manage an annual programme of public and membership engagement work that delivers the strategic aims of the Society;

     implement the Society’s programme of work on promoting meteorology amongst the general public, principally theWeather Club activities including editorial responsibility for content in the newsletter and on the website;

     participate in developing the Society’s education and outreach strategy;

     take a leading role in planning and implementing activities associated with recruiting and retaining members, and developing the benefits available for various groups of members;

     maintain the Brand of the Society as widely recognised and respected both within the UK and internationally by raising the awareness of, and interest in, the work of the Society, through media briefings, social networking and corporate publications; and

     take responsibility for developing and managing the Society’s Corporate Responsibility Programme;

 

From time-to-time, in common with other staff in the Secretariat, this person will also be expected to help on a short-term basis with any task that is necessary to ensure that the Society and its events run efficiently and achieve the objectives set by the Council. In particular when required it will be necessary to attend Society meetings, either in London or across the UK, to assist with organisational activities and to promote the work of the Society.

Required Knowledge and Skills

The Society is looking for an individual to take on this role who:

·        has a good working knowledge of meteorology, ideally as a professional background;

·        has excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to produce factual and interesting content for a general public audience and provide support with outreach through the media;

·        manages their own working schedule without supervision, delivering to tight deadlines and balancing competing priorities;

·        is able to work in a team environment and used to a project-based approach to working;

·        builds strong working partnerships with external collaborators;

·        thinks creatively and embraces new ideas and ways of working;

·        is prepared to take on responsibility for leading particular projects and delivering the practical benefits to the Society.

·        is competent in working with basic IT systems and software packages;

 

In addition it would be desirable, although not essential, if the individual has:

·        been trained in media work, or been involved with working closely with the media;

·        a background in public engagement work in particular with professional bodies or learned societies;

·        knowledge and practical experience of formal project management methods.

Details and Benefits

The position is based at the Society’s Headquarters in Reading, and does on occasion require travelling in the UK, particularly to London. This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week. The Society actively supports flexible working arrangements where practical.

 

The post holder is entitled to 24.5 days holiday leave per year. This increases to 27.5 days after two years and then 32.5 days per year on completion of more than 12 years service.  This holiday entitlement is in addition to the 8 public holidays. These entitlements are based on full-time hours.  In addition to the holiday benefits the Society pays 10% of salary as its employer’s pension contribution.

Reporting

The Public Engagement Programme Manager will report to the Chief Executive and will be an active member of the Education and Outreach Committee, the Membership Development Group and the Meetings Committee.
