The UK Natural Environmental Research Council and the UK Met. Office-Hadley Centre have agreed to jointly resource and coordinate future UK activities in the area of Earth System Modelling. This agreement has led to the development of a UKESM core group, responsible for the development, application and evaluation of future UK Earth System Models. As part of this initiative the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is advertising 4 posts in Earth System Modelling, all of which will be members of the UKESM core group.

 

POST 1

Job title : Research Scientist for Earth System Modelling

Salary : Grade 7 £37,382 - £45,941
Package : Full Time, Fixed Term for 3 years
Job category/type : Research

 

Job description :

We require a motivated and qualified scientist to lead and carry out development, evaluation and application of the low resolution version of the next generation of UK Earth System Models (UKESM1-LO). The work will involve coupled ESM development and application in a range of national and international activities. An important component of the position will be the development of robust evaluation strategies for simulated ESM processes and process interactions. Regular collaboration with other members of the UKESM core group will be required.  

 

You will have:

-       a PhD in the physical sciences, mathematics or a computational science (or equivalent research   experience)

-       a strong motivation for research and the clear potential to develop your own publications

-       knowledge of climate science or a related physical science

-       very good written and verbal communication skills

-       Experience in programming languages such as; Unix/Linux, Python, Fortran,  C++

 

Experience analysing coupled climate models and with coordinating scientific projects would be an advantage.

Job description :

We require a motivated and qualified scientist to contribute to the development of the next generation of UK Earth System Models. The candidate will be a member of the UKESM core group, which has responsibility to develop, apply and evaluate UKESM1 and subsequent model versions. He/She will be part of a team working on the representation of atmospheric chemistry and aerosol processes as part of UKESM, based on the UKCA-GLOMAP model. Extensive collaboration with wider UKCA community will be an important component of the work.

The postholder will be based at the Met Office, Exeter

 

You will have:

-     a PhD in the physical or chemical sciences, mathematics or a computational science (or equivalent research experience)

-    a strong motivation for research and the clear potential to develop your own publications

-    knowledge of climate science or a related physical/chemical science

-    very good written and verbal communication skills

We require a motivated and qualified scientist to contribute to the development of the next generation of UK Earth System Models. The candidate will be a member of the UKESM core group, which has responsibility to develop, apply and evaluate UKESM1 and subsequent model versions. He/She will work on improving the modularity and coupling of UKESM model components, with an emphasis on increased concurrency and overall computational performance and scalability of UKESM versions.

The postholder will be based at the Met Office, Exeter.

 

You will have:

-       A PhD in  computational science, mathematics or a quantitative physical science (or equivalent research experience)

-       A clear ability to develop novel computational solutions to modelling physical systems.

-       Extensive experience in programming languages such as; Unix/Linux, Python, Fortran,  C++

-       Knowledge of programming in a massively parallel environment.

 

Past experience working with large geophysical numerical models would be an advantage

A key requirement will be regular interaction with the community of UK scientists contributing to the development and evaluation of UKESM.

-       A clear ability to develop novel approaches to handling large volumes of simulation data.

-       Extensive experience in programming languages such as; Unix/Linux, Python, Fortran,  C++

-       Knowledge of programming in a parallel environment.

-       Postgraduate research and/or software engineering experience, preferably in a quantitative physical science.

 

Past experience in working with large geophysical numerical models would be an advantage
