2 PhD studentships are available, fully funded for applicants meeting NERC's eligibility requirements for UK nationality or residence. Both projects are available either for an immediate start, or for the usual October 2014 entry. Informal enquires can be made to Dr Elizabeth Kent (eck@noc.ac.uk), and information on how to apply can be found via the Graduate School website (http://noc.ac.uk/gsnocs).

Climate change from centuries of historical ship observations
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This PhD project is tied to the NERC HOSTACE project (http://projects.noc.ac.uk/HOSTACE/) and will investigate the climate change signals in a large archive of historical weather observations from ships, using resources including the NOAA 20th-Century Reanalysis. This PhD is linked to the OldWeather "citizen science" project and has co-supervision from the Met Office Hadley Centre. Accuracy and representativeness of surface observations of marine carbon
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This PhD project is tied to the NERC RAGNARRoC project and will assess the accuracy of fields of surface ocean carbon generated from ship-based observations using output from state-of-the-art numerical ocean models. These fields of surface carbon concentrations are needed to estimate the air-sea exchange of CO2, an important part of the global carbon cycle.
