POSTDOC vacancy (Temporary position)
Date 10 oktober 2013
Number KNMI 2013/11

At the Global Climate Division of the KNMI, in De Bilt, the Netherlands,
there is a
temporary position for:

Post doc

General information

KNMI is the national knowledge institute on weather, climate and climate
change in the Netherlands. An important task of KNMI is to describe and
attribute changes in climate. KNMI develops and publishes national
climate change scenarios which are primarily aimed to guide climate
adaptation. KNMI collaborates with national and international
institutions and researchers. Numerical models of the large scale
atmospheric and oceanic circulation, of sea ice and of the land surface
are used for climate research and development of climate scenarios. Also
observations of the climate system are used to diagnose climate
variability and change.

Job information

After nearly every extreme weather event the question rises whether
anthropogenic climate change has contributed to it and whether the
occurrence and amplitude of extreme events will change in the future.
The candidate will contribute to research on extreme events as part of
the international SPECS and EUCLEIA projects sponsored by the European.
The candidate will investigate the predictability of extreme events and
to what extend they can be attributed to natural climate processes and
to anthro pogenic climate change. The candidate will investigate
physical processes of a selected number of extreme weather events that
occurred recently. Observations, reanalysis data and specific numerical
model simulations will be used for that purpose. Also, the candidate
will make climate predictions with a statistical model and compare it to
predictions made with the complex climate model EC-Earth.

Required
• Phd in meteorology or a similar field of studies
• Analytical skills, knowledge of meteorological and physical climate
processes and of statistical methods used in weather and climate research.
• Ample experience with the technical environment of complex numerical
models (compilers, libraries, version management etc)
• Fluent in English (spoken and written)

Working place: De Bilt
Salary: Max € 4.380,72 gross per month (salaryscale 11)
