PhD Position in "hail predictability and severe storm wind gusts" at the
University of Bern / MeteoSwiss Locarno

The open position is part of the Mobiliar Lab for Climate Impact
Research and Natural Hazards. The goal of the Mobilar Lab is to study
and to quantify the spatio- temporal characteristics of climate risks
and natural hazards and their impacts upon the Swiss society. The focus
is on applied research and practical applications. The Mobiliar Lab is
part of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research at the
University of Bern.

We have an opening for 3 year PhD position starting 1 January 2014.

In this PhD project two closely related topics will be investigated. (i)
based on 10 years of Swiss radar data wind gusts associated with sever
thunderstorms in Switzerland will be analysed. (ii) The potential to
make probabilistic hail forecasts for Switzerland based on meso- and
synoptic-scale indicators will be explored.

The PhD project will be jointly supervised by Urs Germann (Division for
Radar, Satellites, and Nowcasting, MeteoSwiss Locarno) and by Olivia
Romppainen-Martius (University of Bern). It is expected that the PhD
student is willing to work both in Bern and in Locarno.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Masters degree in
the fields of atmospheric science, climate science, meteorology,
physics, geosciences, environmental sciences, geography or similar, with
enthusiasm for research questions in the field of meteorology, with
programming knowledge and an interest in working with large data sets,
with an interest in applied research, with a good knowledge of German
and English and the willingness to work both in Bern and in Locarno.

The PhD project is part of the Graduate School for Climate Studies at
the Oeschger Centre of the University of Bern:
<http://www.climatestudies.unibe.ch/phd_programme/index_en.html>

The graduate school offers a broad range of educational and training
opportunities (Summer school, Young researchers meetings) and a unique
interdisciplinary network in the field of climate sciences at the
University of Bern. The close collaboration with MeteoSwiss and the
Swiss Mobiliar Insurance company offers the possibility to transfer the
research results into practice-relevant applications.

Please send your application documents (diploma and transcript, CV,
letter of motivation and the names and addresses of two references) in
one PDF file to <mailto:urs.germann@meteoswiss.ch> and to
<mailto:Olivia.martius@guib.unibe.ch>. Review of applications will start
on 1 October 2013 and will be continued until the position is filled.

Applications from women are warmly encouraged.

For general questions regarding the Mobiliar Lab, the Oeschger Centre
and the University of Bern please contact Olivia Romppainen-Martius. For
specific questions pertaining to the radar based analyses or to
MeteoSwiss please contact Urs Germann.
