The Institute for Coastal Research of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany, invites applications for a 3.5-year

PhD position (m/f)
code no. 2013/KS 1

starting January 1st, 2014 and ending June 30th, 2017 as part of the project “Regional storms and their marine impacts”.

This project is part of the Cluster of Excellence “Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction” (CliSAP). The main task is the analysis of storm variability at the regional scale for the coasts of Northern Germany both for the past decades and for possible future scenarios. Therefore very high-resolution regional climate model simulations will be computed and analysed for extra-tropical storms and their coastal impacts. The shadowing effects of islands close to the coasts will be examined. In addition, different possible locations for wind parks shall be evaluated depending on their energy potential.

This project is collaboration between the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, the University of Hamburg, the German Weather Forecast Service, and the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology. The position is located at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany.

Required qualifications are:
- master/diploma (or be about to complete) in meteorology/atmospheric physics or in a related scientific field (e.g., geophysics or Earth system science)
- strong interest in storms and atmospheric dynamics
- experience in a higher programming language
- ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English (German would be an advantage)
- experience with atmospheric climate models
- good knowledge of statistics and data analysis
- strong motivation, also to publish results in peer-reviewed journals

Appointment will begin as soon as possible. We offer an appropriate salary related to the German public tariff (TV-AVH) plus the usual social benefits for the public employment sector. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is an equal opportunity employer for women, minorities, and people with disabilities, and strives to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially.
