PhD position in “surface runoff – process study and modelling” (3 years)

The open PhD position is part of the Mobiliar Lab for Climate Impact
Research and Natural Hazards. The goal of the Mobiliar Lab is to study
and to quantify the spatio-temporal characteristics of climate risks and
natural hazards and their impacts upon the Swiss society. The focus is
on applied research and practical applications. The Mobiliar Lab is part
of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, University of Bern
<http://www.oeschger.unibe.ch/>.

We have an opening for a 3-year PhD position starting 1 January 2014 or
upon arrangement.

Surface runoff caused by heavy rainfall often results in severe damages.
The process chain of the surface runoff generation is complex. This PhD
will analyze this process chain with appropriate field methods at
selected field sites in order to develop an adequate numerical model.
This GIS-based model will identify areas where damage-causing surface
runoff could occur. Finally, the PhD thesis will develop recommendations
for practice. The PhD thesis is supervised by Prof. Dr. Rolf Weingartner
(Institute of Geography, University of Bern) and will enroll in an
interdisciplinary research environment

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a MSc in hydrology,
soil hydrology, soil science, environmental sciences, geosciences or
geography, with enthusiasm for research questions in the domain of
hydrological processes and modeling, with the willingness to work in the
field, with manual skills, with an interest in applied research and with
a good knowledge of German and English. The PhD candidate has the
opportunity to coach Bachelor- and Master Theses related to the topic of
his/her PhD.

The PhD project is part of the Graduate School of Climate Sciences at
the Oeschger Centre of the University
<http://www.climatestudies.unibe.ch/>. The graduate school offers a
broad range of educational and training opportunities (Summer School,
Young Researchers Meetings) and a unique interdisciplinary network in
the field of climate sciences at the University of Bern. The close
collaboration with the Swiss Mobiliar Insurance company offers the
possibility to transfer the research results into practice

The gross salary is fixed according to Swiss National Science Foundation
regulations.

For informal inquiries about the PhD position and questions regarding
the Mobiliar Lab, the Oeschger Centre and the University of Bern please
