National Oceanography Centre, Southampton Salary: £19,740-£23,390 (RA),£26,450-£29,710 (PDRA), possibly more for an exceptional candidate 3-year fixed term post We are seeking a highly numerate scientist to undertake research in air-sea interaction. You will join a small team of scientists whose focus is the world-leading NOC Surface Flux and Marine Meteorological Dataset. This dataset is widely used in research areas such as air-sea interaction and climate change and variability studies. The dataset has been used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessments, providing unique observational evidence independent of climate models. Your main duty will be to lead the development and implementation of methods to estimate global fields of wind speed, wind direction and the air-sea exchange of momentum over the oceans from sparse, in situ meteorological observations. The dataset will span at least the last 50-years, potentially the last 100 years. It will be constructed using observations from a variety of different sources all with different uncertainty characteristics. The resulting fields will be incorporated in the NOC Surface Flux Dataset. Working closely with project scientists you will contribute to other aspects of the dataset, lead and contribute to the writing of scientific papers and present your work at international conferences. There may be opportunities to take part in field work on a research ship.
