[Met-jobs] 3yr Postdoc: High resolution Numerical Weather Prediction

From "Beare, Robert" <>

Date Wed, 3 Jul 2013 15:10:27 +0000

Job title: Associate Research Fellow

Location: Exeter

Full-time post,  available from 1 November 2013  on a fixed term basis for 36 months.

Salary: £24,766 up to £25,504 per annum

Closing date: 05/08/2013

The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to work on improving high
resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) with Dr Bob Beare. The Fellow will be
part of the NERC-funded GREYBLS project (modelling GREY-zone Boundary LayerS) in partnership
with Reading University and the Met Office. In high resolution NWP, the boundary layer plays a key
role in many aspects of high-impact weather such as: extreme surface temperatures, the dispersion
of pollutants and chemical species, low level cloud and fog, and the onset of thunderstorms.

The post will include:
*        Formulating the mathematics for sub-grid turbulence models and advection schemes.
*        Investigating boundary-layer turbulence using a three-dimensional simulation model.
*        Implementing new sub-grid models in a state-of-the-art weather model (the Met Office Unified Model).
