JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Assistant Specialist (postdoctoral-level position) in

Regional Climate Modeling

A position at the postdoctoral level is available in the Earth Research
Institute and the Department of Geography at the University of
California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in
a research project in the Climate Variations and Changes (CLIVAC)
research group lead by Professor Leila Carvalho
(<http://clivac.eri.ucsb.edu>). The main goal of the project is to
advance our current understanding of climate processes on
regional-to-continental scales and how they affect the water balance in
the High Asia Mountains. The project focuses on the present climate and
employs multiple sources of data (e.g., in-situ, reanalysis and
satellite data) and regional models to investigate
multiannual-to-decadal variations in winter westerly disturbances (WD),
Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) and their impacts on rainfall, snow and
runoff variability in the Himalayas.

The candidate will be involved in performing multi-year simulations with
the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Research tasks may
include testing and validating WRF simulations and integrating results
with high resolution hydrological models over the Himalayas. Applicants
need to have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related
field, prior to the date of hire. The successful applicant should have
strong experience with the WRF model, Linux environment and programming
skills. Experience with IDL is highly desirable. The selected candidate
will also have demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.

The position is full time and offers a competitive salary
($40,116-45,732/year commensurate with experience) and benefits. The
initial appointment is for one year beginning as soon as September 1,
2013; continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and
availability of funding. The primary consideration date for this
position is July 5, 2013; thereafter open until filled.
