Forwarded from CLIMLIST... Postdoctoral Research Fellow CORDEX and Regional Climate Change Projections for Africa Climate System Analysis Group University of Cape Town South Africa http://www.csag.uct.ac.za/ Start date: Available for immediate appointment, or soonest possible. Duration: 2 years, annually renewable. Remuneration: negotiable depending on qualifications and experience A post-doctoral fellowship is available focusing on the Africa activities related to WCRP CORDEX program (see <http://tinyurl.com/jwbd2jw> for details). CORDEX is a global program to develop multi-model and multi-method downscaled projections of climate change, using Regional Climate Models (RCMs) and Empirical Statistical Downscaling (ESD) methods. CSAG plays a key role in CORDEX that includes coordination of the analysis of CORDEX-Africa results, leading the statistical downscaling initiative, contributing RCM and ESD results, as well as contributing to the overall CORDEX science development and governance. The focus of the post-doc is flexible and offers a choice of opportunities from a diverse set of research themes centered on developing, analyzing and using multi-model multi-method climate projection data. Opportunities include topics such as integrating multi-model data, exploring uncertainty and likelihood, scale dependencies, model evaluation, limits to predictability, translation to stakeholder relevance, projections of changes in climate processes, feedbacks, application in adaptation activities, etc. Requirements: You should have submitted your PhD thesis or have graduated with your PhD within the last 5 years. You will ideally have familiarity with climate modeling, strong skills in analysis of climate data, competency in statistical methods, and programming ability. A willingness to travel within Africa and proficiency in English is important. What to expect: You will have broad scope to develop a research profile within the objectives of the CORDEX program. You will have access to excellent computing resources, and a multi-disciplinary environment that is strongly collaborative with a diversity of interests. There is strong support for engaging with regional, national, and international partners. About CSAG: CSAG is a vibrant multi-disciplinary research group at the University of Cape Town (ranked in the top 100 universities for Earth science <http://tinyurl.com/ku4ckzo>), located in one of the most beautiful places in the world! The group has a strong track record in addressing climate-related issues. Research foci span atmospheric physics, climate analysis, climate modeling and seasonal forecasting, as well as engagement with climate change impacts and adaptation and developing support for stakeholders on climate data use and climate change issues. Currently CSAG runs multiple GCMs and RCMs, and is a strong developer of ESD. CSAG is involved in international partnerships and major international activities, and has three members who are authors in the IPCC. Within Africa, CSAG plays a leading role in the research activities on the continent, and in delivering climate information to users. To apply: Submit applications by email to <firstname.lastname@example.org>. Include a brief letter of motivation outlining your interests, a full CV (no certificates), and the names, email and telephone details of 3 referees. You are also welcome to email with additional questions. ********************************* Prof. Bruce Hewitson DST Research Chair in Climate Change Climate System Analysis Group University of Cape Town
