Job description :

We need a talented and imaginative scientist to join a team effort aimed at improving the representation of the physical processes affecting ocean heat uptake in numerical ocean models. This will be done by implementing and testing an adjoint-based method in the NEMO ocean model platform to constrain sub-gridscale mixing processes from observations. You will develop and test a number of strategies for evaluating the representation of ocean heat uptake processes in a hierarchy of climate models ranging from simple two-layer models to fully comprehensive models.

You will have:

  • A PhD in physical oceanography or a related discipline
  • Experience with numerical ocean models and high performance computing
  • The ability to tackle computationally challenging problems
  • The ability to maintain productive working relationships

Further information about the project

The Department of Meteorology at Reading is the largest of its kind in Europe with over 40 academic staff, 20 senior research staff and fellowship holders, around 90 postdocs and around 70 PhD students. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 75% of our research was graded as world leading or  internationally excellent. Our weighted score places us third in the country in the "Earth Systems and Environmental Science" category, and makes us the highest-graded department focusing on the fundamental science of weather and climate.  We received the highest rating of 5* in all previous Research Assessment Exercises. The Department hosts around 25 Met Office scientists, the Climate Division of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS-Climate), as well as the directorates of the National Centre for Earth Observation and NCAS Models and Data.
