The University of Augsburg, Institute of Geography, Chair for Regional Climate and Hydrology, Germany, offers a PostDoc / Senior Scientist position and a PhD position in Dynamic and Stochastic Methods for the Generation of Spatio-Temporally Coherent High-Resolution Meteorological Fields within the framework of the project SYNOPSE. Starting date is June 1st 2013 or soon after, and the duration of the position is for 3 years. SYNOPSE (Synthetic precipitation time series for the optimal planning and operation of urban drainage systems) is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). For mathematical modeling of urban drainage systems, continuous, long-term and high-resolution time series of precipitation are indispensible. In many cases available observation data cannot fulfill these requirements but observed rainfall statistics can be used to generate synthetic data in adequate spatio-temporal resolution. In the course of the project high-resolution meteorological fields will be generated for present and future climate by combining information from a regional climate model (RCM) with observed statistics stemming from different data sources (meteorological stations, weather radar). The research focus lies on the development of stochastic methods for bias-correction and refinement of RCM results, statistical analysis of generated hydrometeorological fields for present and future climate and their applicability for the mathematical modelling of urban drainage systems. The research work is performed in close cooperation with the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-IFU) at the Campus Alpine of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the SYNOPSE team at several further universities and institutions in Germany. Requirements for PostDoc Position A PhD degree in meteorology, hydrology, physics, maths, geo-ecology, environmental science, environmental engineering, geography or related subjects is required. Extensive skills in at least one programming language (e.g. FORTRAN, C) and MATLAB or R are expected. Comprehensive experiences in geostatistics and hydrometeorological modeling and analysis are needed. Team capability and communication skills in English are required. Requirements for PhD Position A master degree in meteorology, hydrology, physics, maths, environmental science, environmental engineering, geography or related subjects is required. Extensive skills in at least one programming language (e.g. FORTRAN, C) and MATLAB or R are expected. Experiences in regional climate modelling are beneficial. Team capability and communication skills in English are required.
