This project is a joint interdisciplinary project with the Department of Economics, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Prof. Martin Quaas) and is expected to be funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) within its Priority Programme „Climate Engineering: Risks, Challenges, Opportunities?“ (SPP 1689). The PhD project aims at evaluating how much could be learned about the effectiveness of geoengineering by marine cloud brighening by conducing an experiment, and how the scientific value of an experiment increases by increasing its spatiotemporal scale. Requirements - A Diploma or Master's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences or related field - Programming skills (Linux shell scripts, Fortran, data processing and visualisation tools such as the NCAR command language) - Prior experience with cloud-, aerosol- and/or radiation physics and/or experience with satellite data analysis and/or climate modelling - Good knowledge of the English language (German skills are welcomed) The position is offered for up to three years, starting in May 2013 or soon thereafter.
