The Institute for Meteorology, Universität Leipzig, has a vacancy for a

PhD position (m/f)

within the “Learning about cloud brightening under risk and uncertainty:
Whether, when and how to do field experiments (LEAC)” project. This
project is a joint interdisciplinary project with the Department of
Economics, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Prof. Martin Quaas)
and is expected to be funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) within its Priority Programme „Climate
Engineering: Risks, Challenges, Opportunities?“ (SPP 1689). The PhD
project aims at evaluating how much could be learned about the
effectiveness of geoengineering by marine cloud brighening by conducing
an experiment, and how the scientific value of an experiment increases
by increasing its spatiotemporal scale.

Requirements
- A Diploma or Master's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences or
related field
- Programming skills (Linux shell scripts, Fortran, data processing and
visualisation tools such as the NCAR command language)
- Prior experience with cloud-, aerosol- and/or radiation physics and/or
experience with satellite data analysis and/or climate modelling
- Good knowledge of the English language (German skills are welcomed)

The position is offered for up to three years, starting in May 2013 or
soon thereafter. Payment is according to a part-time civil service
position (75% TVL E13).
