RESEARCHER POSITION (1 year + possible renewal 1 year)

The Numerical Weather Prediction group of CNRM-GAME (Météo-France and CNRS) is seeking a scientist to do some research work on the simulation and the assimilation of infrared satellite data.

Context:
The French space agency (CNES) is developing a program called IASI-NG to propose a new infra-red passive sounder, which would have enhanced radiometric noise and spectral resolution, compared to IASI. This new sensor will be on board a series a European polar-orbitting satellites as from 2020 for a 20 year duration. The main features of IASI-NG will greatly improve the detection and retrieval of numerous chemical species, aerosols and will improve the retrievals of thermodynamic profiles. Three communities have pooled together to get prepared to the use of IASI-NG: numerical weather prediction, atmospheric composition and climate monitoring. The selected candidate will work in the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) group of CNRM-GAME, which is in charge of research whose goal is to improve Meteo-France NWP models.

Activities:
In order to quantify IASI-NG benefits for those communities, with respect to IASI, among others, a common framework will be built to undertake observation system simulation experiments (OSSEs).
The candidate will:
1- collect data which are requisite to set up the OSSEs (temperature and humidity atmospheric profiles, atmospheric composition for various species to be selected, etc.).
2- select the relevant cases for the communities and define the appropriate framework for NWP studies
3- simulate IASI and IASI-NG data
4- evaluate IASI-NG benefits compared to IASI, based on the OSSEs..
This work will materialise in scientific articles written by the candidate and oral presentation in conferences.

Required qualifications:
· Strong skills in Linux, Unix, Fortan 90
· Good knowledge of data assimilation (in particular in the frame of numerical weather prediction).
· Good knowledge of the radiative transfer and infra-red passive measurement
· Self reliance in working practices
· Good human and working relationship
· Excellent knowledge of either English or French and a good working knowledge of the other language.

Required qualification
PhD in atmospheric science will be appreciated, or at least an engineer or master degree.

Salary
According to the CNRS grid, and upon qualification and experience, the net monthly salary will range from 1800 € to 2300 €.
