[Met-jobs] Post-doctoral position at CCCma in terrestrial ecosystem modelling

Date Tue, 02 Apr 2013 14:08:29 -0700

Post-doctoral position at the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis in terrestrial ecosystem modelling

A post-doctoral fellowship is available at the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis (CCCma) in the field of terrestrial ecosystem modelling and climate-vegetation interactions. The Canadian Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (CTEM) was recently implemented in the Canadian Regional Climate Model (CRCM5) and fully-coupled simulations with dynamic vegetation modelled by CTEM are currently being set up. However, the implementation of CTEM in CRCM5 does not include competition between PFTs. Inclusion of this aspect will allow spatial distribution of vegetation to change in response to change in climate. The position is based at CCCma located on the campus of the Univ. of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia but requires visits to the Département des Sciences de la Terre et de l'Atmosphère at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in Montreal, Quebec where the CRCM5 activities are housed to gain understanding of running and analyzing model output from CRCM5. The offline components will be first developed and tested at CCCma (in collaboration with CTEM team at CCCma) and then implemented in the CRCM5 (in collaboration with CRCM5 team at UQAM). After implementation of competition in CTEM in CRCM5, the analysis will focus on coupled CRCM5 runs with dynamic vegetation to understand climate-vegetation interactions at the regional scale for the North American domain.

The funding is available for three years so the position is expected to last for three years as well, subject to continued availability of funds and satisfactory performance of the candidate. The salary is CDN $41,000 (plus employer contributes to CPP (Canada Pension Plan) and EI (Employment Insurance)) and the position is available immediately (April 2013).

We are looking for recent PhDs or post-doctoral fellows with 1-2 years of experience in the field of terrestrial ecosystem modelling, terrestrial carbon cycle, land-atmosphere interactions, climate-vegetation interactions or such similar fields. The CTEM code is written in FORTRAN language so familiarity with FORTRAN and linux/unix systems including the ability to write shell scripts is very important.
