Postdoctoral Researcher in Climate Dynamics LOCATION IC3 Headquarters in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT The Institut Català de Ciències del Clima (IC3) is a climate institution created by the Government of Catalunya and the University of Barcelona, aiming at understanding of current and future climate at both global and regional scales, while aiming at improve and further develop technical capabilities and tools to simulate unprecedented changes in climate impacts on societies and economies. IC3 focus on the Mediterranean regions, tropical Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. The Climate Dynamics and Impacts (UDIC) Unit is interested in research fields as diverse as Mediterranean and tropical climates, teleconnections and global climate dynamics, ENSO genesis and its predictability, the role of climate variability on the global carbon cycle and understanding, detecting and simulating climate impacts, particularly on human health (e.g. infectious diseases). We are particularly involved in understanding the ranges of climate sensitivity, in trying to decipher the ways ENSO impacts different regions – using both statistical and dynamic models – and the implications ENSO has for extremes and impacts on socio-economic factors. For more details about the research institute, please have a look at our website www.ic3.cat We are looking to recruit a 12+12 month full-time Postdoctoral Researcher in Climate Dynamics. The selected applicant will join the UDIC and the RG. Global Climate Variability and will give support also to research on climate-driven infectious diseases models. Expertise on tropical climate dynamics and climate modelling is expected from the candidate and capacity to bridge the gap with mathematical modellers and statisticians working on the simulation of infectious diseases. REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, applied statistics, or a related field. Ideal candidates will have several of the following attributes: Previous experience in working with and analyzing global climate model outputs and data downscaling. Demonstrated experience/knowledge on tropical climate dynamics and predictability. Multivariate statistical climate data analysis skills. Previous experience in applying climate information within the context of climate impact studies. Advanced programming skills using R, cdo, nco, fortran and/or python. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. A willingness and temperament to facilitate the communication bridge between climate scientists/modelers, climate impacts researchers and users of climate information. Capacity to write proposals, manuscripts and to work with other colleagues in a highly collaborative environment will also be valued. CONDITIONS AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES The position is opened for 12+12 months. Possibility of extending the contract beyond two years will be possible depending on the accomplishments by the candidate.The position starts preferably in April or May 2013 or as soon as possible after that date. Salary will be commensurate with Spanish standards for postdoctoral contracts: Gross salary 27.582-29.087.
