The Institute for Applied Remote Sensing at the European Academy Bolzano
- Italy (EURAC), dealing with environmental problems in the context of
global change, is looking for an:

Expert in land use / cover monitoring with high resolution remote sensing

The applicant will support our team in developing and applying new
operational methodologies for mapping and monitoring land cover / land
use (LULC) in complex alpine regions with high resolution optical remote
sensing. The work will be performed in the scope of two running
EU-projects (GMES) and a regionally funded project. The applicant will
also support and be partly responsible for project management.
Furthermore he/she will actively publish in scientific papers, develop
new project ideas and contribute to research proposals on this topic.

Qualification
Essential
- Master or PhD in a geoscience with focus on remote sensing of land
cover / land use
- 2 years of work experience in scientific projects and/or operational
monitoring activities with a focus on land cover / land use monitoring.
- Advanced skills in image processing, data mining and machine learning
based classification (e.g., Support Vector Machine, Random Forest ) of
multi-temporal high resolution optical sensor images including a deep
understanding of potentials and limitations of the various approaches.
- Strong experience in the practical aspects of LULC projects like
experimental design, ground truthing and field work
- Programming skills, preferable in IDL
- Team skills and good communication skills with users and other
international partners
- Very good English skills

Desirable
- Experience in project management and fundraising
- Experience in publishing in scientific journals
- Knowledge on complex and semi-natural landscapes ideally with a focus
on the Alpine biogeographic region
- Good GIS skills (ArcGIS)
- Background in statistics and geostatistics
- Good German and / or Italian skills
