Job Posting Title: Director, Climate Change Science Institute, Oak Ridge
National Laboratory

Purpose:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a dynamic and dedicated
full-time director for its Climate Change Science Institute (CCSI).
Initiated in 2009, the CCSI comprises more than 100 ORNL staff and
post-graduate researchers and currently receives research funding in
excess of $35M per year. The CCSI mission is to advance our
understanding of the Earth system, describe the consequences of climate
change, and inform policy on the outcomes of climate change responses.
Our scientists engage in fundamental research that spans scientific
domains from Earth system modeling, carbon cycle and terrestrial
ecosystem science, climate change data science, and the analysis of
climate change impacts and options for adapting to and mitigating future
climate change. Our research philosophy is to integrate advanced
simulation science, data analytics, and visualization with field- and
lab-based observational/experimental programs to improve process-scale
to global-scale coupled Earth system models to enhance decision making
about climate change.

Through CCSI, ORNL intends to be a global leader in interdisciplinary
climate science and climate change decision support. We expect the
full-time CCSI Director to provide an ongoing and evolving vision for
the institute, to extend the institute's research portfolio and funding
base, to solidify the institute's international reputation and identity,
and to energize and mobilize ORNL's outstanding scientific assets to
address climate change challenges.

As a sign of ORNL's firm commitment to the long-term success of CCSI and
its interdisciplinary mission, the CCSI Director will report directly to
the Associate Laboratory Directors of Computing and Computational
Sciences and Energy an Environmental Sciences. With the creation of this
position ORNL continues to expand its longstanding commitment to climate
change science.

chart, and staff, please visit:

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

. Lead the continuing development of programs and strategic initiatives
for ORNL in climate change science.
. Provide leadership in growing external funding for the CCSI.
. Participate in national and international dialogues about climate
change so as to promote the CCSI and further solidify its identity.
. Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with other national
laboratories, colleges and universities, other research institutions,
public and private corporations, and the public policy community.
. Enhance communication and integration among CCSI research disciplines.
. Perform individual research in a relevant discipline.
. Work with line-management to recruit and retain excellent scientific
staff at ORNL.
. Represent the CCSI to senior leaders at ORNL.

Minimum Qualifications Required

. An advanced degree with at least 15 years of experience in a
discipline relevant to the CCSI research portfolio (e.g., computational
earth system modeling, data analytics, terrestrial ecology, carbon cycle
science, hydrology, visualization, climate change
impacts/adaptation/vulnerability science, data systems architecture).
. Evidence of contributions to the field of climate change science
through peer-reviewed publications, major government or NGO reports,
leadership of major scientific initiatives, etc.
. Demonstrated record of relevant leadership experience.
. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with
multidisciplinary research staff, administrators, program sponsors,
industry/government/laboratories, and consumers of climate change
science information.
. A demonstrated ability to translate fundamental scientific results
into usable information for a variety of stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

. Experience in leading multidisciplinary organizations or major
multidisciplinary initiatives and a proven ability to work
collaboratively with people from a diverse range of disciplines and
backgrounds.
. Experience in strategic planning.
. Experience working with a variety of national or international
agencies and charities with a potential interest in funding climate
change research.
. Demonstrated ability to successfully engage and motivate internal
staff on new initiatives.
