Center for Prototype Climate Modeling/NYU Abu Dhabi Institute
Andrew Majda (PI), Olivier Pauluis (co-PI), Shafer Smith (co-PI)
NYU Abu Dhabi, through its NYU Abu Dhabi Institute, seeks to be a world-class center of cutting-edge research, scholarship, and cultural activity. The Institute offers outstanding facilities; research funding at a significant level and with exceptional continuity of support; and a vigorous, cohesive, and interactive intellectual environment. The NYUAD Institute has recently awarded a research grant to the PI and co-PIs to create the Center for Prototype Climate Modeling, investing a total of $12 million in the project over a five-year period, renewable for a second five-year period. The Center will develop new, innovative approaches in climate forecasting, especially as they relate to the tropics and subtropics, to improve the accuracy of algorithms used for climate change predictions. The core activities of the center will focus on two related themes: (I) The development of new methods, including diagnostics, data assimilation, parametrization, and prediction; and (II) the application of these methods to critical problems in the dynamics of the tropical and subtropical atmosphere and ocean.
Positions are available for up to 2 senior research scientists and 3 postdoctoral researchers. While talent and an exceptional research record in all related fields are paramount, we especially encourage applications from researchers with expertise in air-sea interaction, large-scale climate modeling and diagnosis, especially as it applies to the tropics and subtropics, and development of new approaches to parametrization in both atmospheric and oceanic circulation models. All positions will be based in Abu Dhabi, but researchers may spend up to 2 months per year at the Courant Institute in New York City. NYU Abu Dhabi offers very substantial benefits, including allowances for housing, transportation, and home visits, in addition to health insurance and an attractive retirement plan.
Senior scientists will collaborate directly with the PI and co-PIs, develop their own research
agenda in accordance with the overall goals of the center, help supervise the postdoctoral
associates, and develop a long-term relationship with climate research centers worldwide.
Appointments will be made for a five-year term, contingent upon positive annual reviews. The
annual salary is in the range $110K-$140K, depending on qualifications.
Postdoctoral research fellows will work closely with the PI, co-PIs and senior scientists.
Appointments are offered for two-year periods, contingent upon positive annual reviews;
extensions up to five years may be possible in exceptional cases. The annual salary is
in the range $65K-$80K, depending on qualifications.
Applicants should send a CV and the names of three professional references via email or regular mail to Kenturah Taylor (email@example.com), Courant Institute, New York University, New York, NY 10012, USA. Applicants for the senior scientist positions should also include a one-page research statement, describing the applicant’s scientific goals, and how they relate to the goals of the Center. Review of applications will begin November 15, 2012 and will continue until suitable candidates are hired.
