Post-doctoral Fellowship: Small-Scale Salinity and Mixing Processes at
the Ocean Surface and their Implications for Air-Sea Exchange

--------------------------------------------------------------------
This position is for a period of 12 months, with the possibility to
extend for a further 2 years.

Deadline for application is February 28th 2013

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Scientific Description:
The primary focus of this project is to study the small-scale
processes at the ocean surface to quantify their impact on air-sea
exchange of freshwater, heat, and momentum. This study will use data
from the the Air-Sea Interaction Profiler (ASIP), an upwardly-rising
instrument which has a suite of high-resolution sensors including
temperature, salinity, shear, velocity, and PAR. The shear
measurements provide the level of turbulence, which is quantified by
the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. This dissipation and
temperature/salinity profiles are essential to determining the
vertical turbulent fluxes of salt and temperature in a stratified
system, which is the main mechanism of transport of these scalars.
Because of the high spatial resolution of the salinity profiles, the
sea surface salinity can be determined exactly and related to the bulk
salinity and the turbulent fluxes. We currently have several datasets
from ASIP which will allow the candidate to immediately commence
analysis.

Requirements: A PhD in ocean or environmental sciences or engineering.
Experience with Matlab is essential. Familiarity with small-scale
mixing processes and oceanic microstructure. For further information,
contact Brian Ward bward@nuigalway.ie.
