Support Scientists (3 vacancies) with focus on Climate Modelling & Analysis at NYU, Abu Dhabi

The newly established Center for Prototype Climate Modelling (CPCM), NYU, Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) are seeking to appoint motivated and experienced support scientists to provide programming support to its scientists and researchers. The center will develop new, innovative approaches in climate forecasting, especially as they relate to the tropics and subtropics, to improve the accuracy of algorithms used for climate change predictions. The core activities of the center will focus on two related themes: (I) The development of new methods, including diagnostics, data assimilation, parametrization, and prediction; and (II) the application of these methods to critical problems in the dynamics of the tropical and subtropical atmosphere and ocean.

CPCM has three open positions, one senior and two junior support scientists. Candidates for the Senior Support Scientist position should have a Ph.D. In Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Geosciences or a related field. Candidates for the Junior Support Scientist positions should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics or a similar field, and at least one year experience in scientific programming.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in a subset of the following areas:high performance (clustered) computing, scientific programming using Fortran77/90/95/C/C++,parallel computing on Linux clusters using MPI and/or OpenMPI, weather/climate modelling, working with large datasets and Linux system administration.

One or more of the following skills will be considered as an added advantage: skill with shell programming (e.g bash, c-shell), skill with scripting languages such as Perl, Python and PHP, working knowledge in visualization packages such as NCL, IDL, GrADS and the ability to write MATLAB codes to process and visualize data.

Working in a dynamic environment, the Support Scientists will perform a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to scientific programming, coupling of model components, processing and analysis of observational data and climate model output. In general, we seek flexible and proactive team players who enjoy learning about and solving new scientific and computational problems.

To apply, please email a single PDF file containing a cover letter, a CV, a one-page summary of relevant projects you have worked on, and contact information of at least two references to Asma Kamal <ak182@nyu.edu> with Support Scientist in the subject line. Mentioning your skype ID under contact information is encouraged.

These positions are available immediately and will remain open until filled. Initial appointments will be for one year, with excellent possibility of renewal for up to five years, contingent upon positive annual reviews. The annual salary is in the range $40K-$80K USD with substantial benefits. The salary will be competitive, commensurate with experience, and will comply with NYUAD guidelines. Successful completion of a security check is required prior to employment.

For specific enquiries regarding the position, contact Dr. Ajaya Mohan Ravindran, Senior Scientist, CPCM <Ajaya.Mohan@nyu.edu>.
