Vacancy: Research Scientist/Research Assistant, Bodeker Scientific, New
Zealand
Term: 1 year fixed term with possible extension

Bodeker Scientific is a research company based in New Zealand focussing
on atmospheric and climate research. The company holds research
contracts with both national funding agencies and a number of
international organisations. The company operates as a federation of
largely independent researchers who collaboratively work on shared
contracts under a commonly agreed company constitution. Decision making
is devolved as deeply as possible in the company with an emphasis on
operational and academic freedom and personal responsibility to ensure
that contracts are completed on time and to a high standard.

As a result of growing workload, the company is now in a position to
take on an additional person to join our team based at Alexandra in
Central Otago, New Zealand. Primary responsibilities of the applicant,
depending on their own interests and skills, will include:
1) Writing software for data analysis, data display and data manipulation.
2) Running models and analysing model results.
3) Analysing measurements of atmospheric composition from ground- and
satellite-based instruments.
4) Interpretation of results from measurement and modelling studies.
5) Synthesis and writing up of research results for publication.
6) Writing achievement/client reports.

These responsibilities will be applied in a number of projects including
assisting with:
1) The development of climate data records of stratospheric essential
climate variables,
2) The ongoing establishment of the Global Climate Observing System
(GCOS) Reference Upper Air Network (www.gruan.org),
3) Validation of satellite-based measurements of ozone,
4) The generation of 21st century projections of various surface climate
variables for the region of New Zealand for input to climate impacts models,
5) The development of climate pattern scaling approaches to climate
modelling,
6) Research into the role of stratospheric sulfur in the climate system,
as well potentially new research projects currently under development.

While the term of employment is currently fixed at one year, if
additional/ongoing funding is obtained either by the candidate or by the
existing team, the position could be extended to a longer term.

This position would suit, e.g.
1) A recent PhD graduate looking for a post-doc position, with possible
extension, with a vibrant research organisation located in a special
part of the world.
2) A well established scientist looking for a one year 'break' who would
be interested in coming to work with us on these exciting projects.
3) A current post-graduate, masters, or PhD student with strong
programming/computing skills looking for a year 'off' in New Zealand to
gain some research experience.

We are looking for a person with skills in as many of the following
areas as possible:
1) Atmospheric physics
2) Atmospheric chemistry
3) Climate modelling
4) Data analysis
5) C++ programming
6) Delphi/pascal programming
7) Python programming
8) IDL programming
9) Management of linux and windows operating systems
10) Scientific writing skills

The salary for this position will be determined by negotiation.

Bodeker Scientific is located in Alexandra, Central Otago, known for its

pursuits including mountain biking, kayaking, cross-country skiing in
winter, rock climbing etc.. While we work hard, we try not to let work
get in the way of mountain bike rides.
