The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a

Postdoctoral Scientist in vegetation-climate interactions

(m/f – Ref. 2013-02).

The newly founded Emmy Noether independent junior research group “Forest management in the Earth system”, funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), will carry out fundamental research with the objective to improve our understanding of the human impact on climate via land use. Specifically, this group will investigate the role of forest management for past and future climate, including its potential to mitigate climate change. Research will involve the development of a forest management module in the Earth system model of the MPI-M (MPI-ESM) to simulate the two-way interaction of forest management and Earth system dynamics.

We seek a post-doctoral scientist to perform research on how to represent various forest management methods in an ESM framework. He/she will work closely with other members of the MPI-M’s Land Department on the climate modeling aspects, but will specifically be responsible for the evaluation of the carbon cycle dynamics on local to global scale, compilation and integration of observational data of forest growth, and assessment of the climatic effects of a range of future land use scenarios, including scenarios of mitigation and adaptation.

Applicants should have

-       a PhD in Forest Sciences, Ecology, Geosciences, Meteorology, Physics or related fields

-       a strong knowledge about forestry

-       expertise in scientific computing, including programming skills (Fortran on Unix-type platforms)

-       experience with data analysis (observational and/or modeling)

-       experience and/or interest in global climate modeling

-       excellent communication skills in English

The position is initially offered for three years, with the possibility of an extension to five years, starting June 2013 or soon thereafter. Payment will be in accordance with a civil service position (TVöD E13), including extensive social security plans. Conditions of employment follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences, and those of the German civil service.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientists and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status. All applications (including a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of scientific degrees, and the names and contact information of two references), received by February 28, 2013 will receive full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

Please send your application, preferably by e-mail to jobs(at) (one PDF-attachment with max. 5MB only including all documents) or by post to:
