Two PhD positions open in my theoretical oceanography/geophysical fluid dynamics group. Both positions are in submesoscale dynamics in the ocean. Possible topics are: - extending dynamical system tools to identify Lagrangian coherent structure to three dimensions and application to the oceanic mixed layer - study of submesoscale dynamics making use of the semigeostrophic and surface semi-geostrophic approximations, and comparison with other approximations and simulations/data - mixing in the ocean interior due to mixed layer instabilities: effects of diurnal and seasonal cycles, possibility to parameterize the mixing, etc Some good knowledge in geophysical fluid dynamics and/or dynamical systems would be desirable.
The official announcements, with instructions on how to apply are here:

A note on the length of the contracts:
- one position is advertised as expiring on September 30, 2015. This short period is due to the fact that at the end of my third year in Hamburg my position will be evaluated, and they do not want me to advertise a position longer than this first period. If my position will be re-confirmed, the PhD position will be extended for one more year. - one position is advertised as 24 months long. Additional 12 months will be paid under the SFB proposal "Below the Rossby radius". This proposal has not been submitted already. Waiting for the proposal to be submitted and hopefully funded I will apply for extra external funding, in order to make sure that the third year will be funded.
