NERC quota PhD studentship to start September 2013 at the University of Edinburgh. Full funding is limited to UK citizens.

Project: The  NERC-funded  Greenhouse gAs Uk and Global Emissions (GAUGE, 2013-2016+) project led by  the U. Edinburgh  (http://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/research/eochem/gauge.html) will  quantify UK emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O from different sectors, and improve global GHG emission estimates. For the UK, we have designed an integrated and inter-calibrated network of  atmospheric  measurements incorporating  ground-based, airborne (UK BAe-146 research  aircraft), ferry-borne, balloon-borne, and space-borne sensors, including new sensor  technology. We  will  interpret these data  using established computer models of the atmosphere, which  describe the movement of GHGs after emission, and sophisticated statistical methods. The  main outcome from GAUGE will be robust GHG emission estimates (and associated uncertainties) from the UK and from the rest of the world. The successful candidate will help develop established modelling and analysis techniques to interpret GHG isotope measurements made during GAUGE to quantity UK anthropogenic emissions.

The ideal candidate will have an academic background in a quantitative science. They will be able to work independently as well as within a larger research group. GAUGE offers the successful candidate an excellent opportunity to work within a strong  international team of researchers. More  broadly, the project is affiliated, through the supervisor, to the  NERC  National Centre for  Earth Observation, and is affiliated, via GAUGE activities, to the NERC National Centre for  Atmospheric Research.

More detailed project information can be found at:

Application deadline: 1 February 2013. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact me directly prior to the deadline: paul(dot)palmer(at)ed(dot)ac(dot)uk.
