The German Meteorological Service (DWD) provides weather and climate services
to the general public, to governmental institutions, to the scientific
community, and to private and commercial users. The central climate bureau
(department of climate and environment consultancy), to which the open post is
assigned, is, amongst other duties, concerned with issues surrounding climate
modeling.
The central climate bureau of the German Meteorological Service (DWD) in
Frankfurt/Offenbach (Germany) is looking, for the EU research project EUPORIAS,
fixed-term from 01.05.2013 for a period of 38 months, a

Research Scientist

Reference code 20120094_9334

The German Meteorological Service together with more than 20 other partners
from NMHSs, universities, agencies and companies from a couple of European
countries cooperates in the EU-funded project EUPORIAS. The aim of this project
is the development of seasonal to decadal forecasts of climate impact on
different economic sectors (energy and water policy, health, transport,
agriculture, tourism) as well as the analysis of the vulnerability of economic
sectors to climate change and the development of proper climate services for
the end-user.

The successful applicant will contribute to the development of a regional
seasonal forecast system for East Africa. Together with contributions of other
international partners these forecasts will be combined to a large ensemble to
enhance the reliability of the forecasts. A close cooperation with the „World
Food Programme“ is arranged since the food production is very vulnerable to
extreme weather events in this region and an early identification of such an
event allows taking adaptation measures reducing the impact early in advance.

The job description includes the following activities:
· Development of a regional seasonal forecast system for East Africa
for the use in the early warning system for droughts of the World Food Programme
· Contribution to the scientific development of COSMO-CLM hindcast
ensembles based on anomaly-initialized seasonal EC-Earth hindcasts
· Contribution to the scientific development of regional seasonal
forecast using the appropriate error statistics
· Analysis of the quality and variability of the EUPORIAS multi model
ensemble forecasts; comparison to the results of the global forecasts (added
value) and of the statistical downscaling techniques
· Providing scientific publications as well as presentations of results
for public boards and international professional audience

Necessary requirements for the candidates are:
· Scientific degree (master or diploma) preferably in meteorology or
related subjects
· English language skills (equivalent to Level B2 CEFR)

Further essential experiences:
· Knowledge in the procedures and algorithms of regional numerical
climate models
· Knowledge and experience in handling complex numerical climate models
· Knowledge in theoretical meteorology
· Knowledge and experience in the evaluation of ensemble forecasts
· Knowledge and experience in programming languages used for numerical
modeling (FORTRAN 90/95, Perl, UNIX-ksh)
· Knowledge in visualization software (GrADS, IDL, etc.)
· Knowledge and experience in the presentation and publication of
research results
· Basic knowledge in Geographic information system (GIS)
· Knowledge in operation systems of high performance computers and
workstations as well as MS Office software
· personal initiative, performance and commitment
· confident capability of oral and written expression
· good planning and organizational skills together with a high degree of
elaborateness
· capability for analytical and joined-up thinking
· compliance and willingness to acquire new skills
· ability to work under pressure
· ability to work in a team.
