Aerosol mass spectrometric investigations of secondary organic aerosol

PhD at IEK-8: Troposphere, FZ-Jülich

 

With 4400 staff members Forschungszentrum Jülich is the largest interdisciplinary research center in Germany focusing its research in the fields of health, environment and energy, and information technology. At IEK-8:Troposphere simulation chamber experiments, experimental field studies, and model calculations are used to investigate the processes that control the chemical transformation and spatial distribution of trace compounds, and their ultimate removal from the atmosphere. About 60 scientists, engineers, technicians, and doctoral students are currently working at the institute in the field of atmospheric chemistry. According to IPCC, aerosols still pose the largest uncertainty in a reliable prediction of future radiative forcing and the Earths’ radiation balance. The photochemical formation of so called secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is among the processes that need to be better understood. We therefore study the formation of SOA in chamber experiments and field observations.

 

Job description

 

We have an immediate opening for a PhD student focusing on aerosol mass spectrometric investigations of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The candidate will be involved in ongoing projects in the area of biogenic SOA formation at our simulation chambers and in the field. The candidate will operate an Aerodyne high resolution aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS), interpret the data with statistical data analysis tool and compare compositional data with data from other aerosol instrumentation.

 

Qualifications

 

·         M. Sc. (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, or a related discipline.

·         Experience in mass spectrometry and/or aerosol measurement techniques are a pro

·         Interest in atmospheric chemistry

·         Excellent technical and organizational skills

·         Willingness to communicate research results and to interact within an international research environment

 

The position is offered for three years. Payment is offered according to the salary scheme for civil service (TVöD). Starting date is as soon as possible.
