A PDRA position in Statistics for Volcanic Ash Hazards is open at the University of Reading in the Meteorology Department as part of the RACER (Robust Assessment and Communication of Environmental Risk) project.

Project Description: The RACER project is about improving the assessment and communication of uncertainty in natural hazard forecasts.  The focus of this PDRA position will be on developing new quantitative methods for forecasts of volcanic ash hazards.  The researcher will perform an assessment of source, parameter and structural uncertainty in dispersion models for different types of volcanic eruption; help develop a statistical emulator to approximate the dispersion model; develop tools for producing probabilistic volcanic ash forecasts; write scientific papers and present results at meetings and conferences. The researcher will collaborate with six other PDRA's funded on the RACER project and will also be in frequent contact with the Met Office Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, who are project partners.

Qualifications: The applicant must have, or be close to completing a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in Atmospheric Science, Statistics, or a closely related subject. They must have some experience with research, writing research papers and giving conference presentations.  Knowledge of statistical methods and experience with numerical models are an advantage. The researcher will also be required to work closely with the Met Office and other partners so strong communications skills are essential.

Application Details: The position is full-time, fixed-term for 24 months.  Grade 6 - £27,578 to £29,249 per annum.
