PhD positions in global climate modeling, ETH Zurich, SwitzerlandThe Climate Physics group led by Prof. Reto Knutti <www.iac.ethz.ch/groups/knutti/> at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, invites applications for PhD positions in climate modeling.
-> The projects: (A) the first PhD project will systematically assess the potential and limitations of a new set of global and regional climate model simulations to provide impact-relevant climate information. In the coming decades, regional changes in temperature extremes may be substantially larger or smaller than the expected long-term trend (forced signal) or even absent as a result of internal variability. The project will quantify and evaluate the simulated internal climate variability for different locations, timescales, and spatial scales, compare internal variability in unforced and forced simulations and will quantify the forced signals in climate extremes and uncertainty ranges induced by internal variability. The successful candidate will perform NCAR CESM <www.cesm.ucar.edu/> global climate model experiments to understand the contribution of different climate processes and feedbacks inducing projection uncertainties. (B) The second PhD project will use the NCAR CESM global climate model to study climate change scenarios and associated uncertainties, atmospheric feedbacks, ocean heat uptake and evaluate the large-scale model behaviour with observations.

-> Your background: successful applicants have a Master’s degree, Diploma or equivalent in atmospheric sciences, physics or a related subject. Regardless of background, the successful applicant have an interactive and highly motivated personality, excellent English language skills, the ability to carry out research in an interdisciplinary and international environment, and a strong desire to disseminate the results in conference talks and journal articles. The project involves programming, working with parallel codes and large amounts of data on high performance computers. Scientific computing support is provided.
