Postdoc Position (m/f) in Coupled Trait-based Ecosystem Modelling Our Institute for Coastal Research invites applications for a 3-year (with possible extension) Postdoc Position (m/f) in Coupled Trait-based Ecosystem Modelling. The place of employment is Geesthacht. Postdoc Position (m/f) in Coupled Trait-based Ecosystem Modelling - code no. 2012/KS 12 Marine ecosystems reveal an intriguing variability in their internal response to external changes. This variability, among others, derives from two-way interactions between physics and biology, or from the adaptive trait dynamics within communities. In coastal seas such as the German Bight, ecosystem structure is observed to change on annual to decadal scales. Primary objective of the position is to understand and reconstruct the long-term variability in coastal ecosystem dynamics. The candidate will design and conduct numerical experiments using a trait-based ecosystem model that resolves adaptive dynamics. This model will be embedded into a novel modular framework structure, which is developed in the project “Modular System for Shelves and Coasts” (MOSSCO), an integration of model and data components across all major coastal Earth-system compartments. The work will require the usage of large observational and model-based data-sets such as COSYNA or COASTDAT, also in order to assess the predictive skill of coastal ecosystem models. We seek a candidate with a proven expertise in numerical modelling and, preferably, knowledge in plankton ecology or marine biogeochemistry. Profound knowledge in statistical analysis is of advantage, and very good programming skills (e.g., C or Fortran) desired. The candidate should demonstrate strong writing abilities. Applicants with a PhD in environmental sciences, oceanography, biology, physics, or related disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. The department of Ecosystem Modelling at the Institute for Coastal Research hosts an interdisciplinary and highly motivated group of research scientists (www.hzg.de/ecomod) and leads or participates in various national and international projects. The group activities are centered around coastal biogeochemistry and the development and application of trait-based models. Appointment will begin as soon as possible. We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
