3.5 Year PDRA in greenhouse gas measurement and modelling

Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group, University of Bristol

Supervisors: Simon O'Doherty and Matt Rigby

You will take a leading role in the NERC-funded Greenhouse gAs Global and Uk Emissions (GAUGE) project. GAUGE is a consortium involving institutions across the UK (Bristol, Edinburgh, Met Office, Cambridge, Leicester, Manchester, CEH, RAL), with the aim of developing pioneering greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement and modeling techniques, to constrain UK emissions at higher accuracy and resolution than ever before. Based in the Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group (ACRG) at the University of Bristol, you will work closely with Prof Simon O’Doherty and Dr Matt Rigby to deliver high-resolution UK emissions estimates of CO2, CH4 and N2O, by developing and using new instruments, and atmospheric chemical transport models. You will work closely with GAUGE partners, particularly the UK Met Office, to produce simulations of GHG atmospheric transport and develop “inverse” methods to derive emissions from the diverse new range of GAUGE measurements (including satellite, aircraft, ship and tower-based observations). The role represents a unique opportunity for an ambitious young researcher to make a significant impact on this rapidly evolving field.
