RESEARCH FELLOW OPPORTUNITIES AT UNIVERSITY OF GENOA, ITALYPlease be advised of two research fellowship opportunities at DICCA – Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Genoa – www.dicca.unige.it, in the field of i) wave modeling and analysis and ii) Lagrangian Coherent Structures and mixing processes. These positions have been funded by a joint program between Regione Liguria and local industries in order to facilitate and stimulate the technological transfer between research institutes and private enterprises. Both the research program will be worked out synergistically with private enterprises working in the field of the Environmental Engineering, located in the Genoa Area.
RESEARCH PROGRAM 1 - WAVE MODELING AND ANALYSISTitle: Optimization of third generation spectral model for wave generation, growth and propagation in the Mediterranean basin and downscaling for the Ligurian Sea.
Description of the research: The main subject of the research within this project focuses on the practical and operative use of the third-generation spectral models for the description of the generation and propagation of waves from the open sea (Mediterranean basin) to the local scales of the nearby coastal zones (physiographic units). The main objective of the research project concerns the development and application of an operative model chain able to describe and simulate the processes of generation of waves in the open sea and the processes of propagation towards the coast. To this end, we will link together the model Wavewatch III (Tolman, 1992) with a medium resolution on the Mediterranean Sea with the SWAN model (Booij et al, 1999; Rise et al, 1999), at high-resolution near the coast of the Ligurian Sea for meteorological purposes and for evaluations of climatological wave (analysis of extreme events and return periods of storms, i.e. wave hindcast) on a local scale.
Components of the work:Setting up an operational tool to nest SWAN in unstructured grids in Wavewatch III Regional model for the Ligurian Sea; Validate and test the model with hindcast data for the period 1990-2010 against buoy and satellite measurements; Statistical analysis of hindcast data for a different locations along the Ligurian Coast (extreme events, seasonal variability, wave climate characterization); Development of sea routing algorithms for navigation optimization in terms of comfort, bunker consumption and travel time.
RESEARCH PROGRAM 2 - LAGRANGIAN COHERENT STRUCTURES AND MIXING PROCESSESTitle: Lagrangian modeling of mass transfer in marine and coastal environment: tools for the management of water quality of Mar Ligure
Description of the research: The research activity regards the study of the dispersion processes owing to turbulent flows generated by the simultaneous action of wind, tides and gravity waves in the coastal environment. The ability to predict the dispersion processes in a natural environment is of fundamental importance also for the management of the latter and to predict the impact of exceptional natural events. For the present project, different numerical models for the simulation of the flow will be employed with the following goals:
application to the Ligurian Seastudy of the dispersion processes based on Lagrangian techniques. Identification of the so-called Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS).
Components of the work:- Development and testing of numerical tools for Lagrangian Coherent Structures identification for 2D non stationary flows; - Application of the Lagrangian techniques for LCS extraction to the sea circulation of the Northern Thyrrenian basin; - Test of the developed tools in different geophysical flows (coastal, oceanic, riverine and biological ones) for the analysis of mixing patterns.
Required/preferred qualifications of candidates:- Master Degree in Engineering, Physics, Environmental Science, Oceanography. Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Fluid Mechanics, Coastal Engineering or a closely related field is an additional value.
- Good knowledge in hydrodynamics, wave theory and statistical analysis. - Skills in scientific computing and development of numerical models.She or he must have a good sense of teamwork. A good knowledge of English (writing articles, easy oral communication) is highly desirable.
