School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management
Generous Industry Top-up PhD Scholarship: An outstanding and motivated PhD candidate is being sought to work
as part of a research team on the problem of developing inter-annual hydrometeorological forecasting capabilities. The project is supported by The University of Queensland and Snowy Hydro Ltd.
The School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management is one of the largest Schools of this type in
Australia with 37 full-time academic staff who are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds. It is a vibrant, multidisciplinary School with extensive teaching and research programs. The School has a strong international research
profile with active Research Centres across its fields of expertise.
This PhD project will work on applying novel analysis techniques to profile the hydrometerology of precipitation
in the alpine area of southeastern Australia and understand this in relation to drivers of sub- and interannual climate variability. The successful candidate will have a 1st class Honours degree with experience in synoptic meteorology, hydrometeorology and
teleconnection forced climate variability. A proven track record of research using reanalysis datasets highly desirable. The studentship will be based at The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus and will involve a joint supervisory team from both UQ
and The University of Western Australia. The project will provide opportunity to be involved in fieldwork to support the larger research program in the Australian Alps, but it is expected that the candidate's research program would be largely computer-based
within the Climate Research Group, UQ.
The successful candidate will also receive support for their research expenses associated with the Project.
Students must be Australian residents or New Zealand citizens and must already hold or be willing to obtain an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) at UQ. A commencement date before March 2013 is preferred.
Tax-free Top Up Scholarship of $12,000 per annum for three years, with the possibility of a six month extension.
