Director The University of Texas Marine Science Institute Port Aransas, Texas www.utmsi.utexas.edu Background: The University of Texas at Austin seeks applicants for the position of Director of the Marine Science Institute (UTMSI). UTMSI is located in Port Aransas on the northern tip of Mustang Island at the gateway to pristine estuaries and the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, less than one hour from Corpus Christi. UTMSI is part of The University of Texas at Austin, College of Natural Sciences and is Texas’ first permanent marine laboratory and one of the most prestigious in the Gulf of Mexico. The Institute’s mission is dedicated to research, education and outreach as it applies to the Texas coastal zone and other marine environments. UTMSI employs over 140 individuals, including 15 faculty, 25 graduate students, 11 post-doctoral and administrative and support staff. Role: The Director oversees all operational and organizational issues of UTMSI and is responsible for sustaining the success of the Institute’s scientific research, education initiatives, and the recruitment of top-tier researchers. The Director serves as the chief spokesperson, ambassador and fundraiser for UTMSI. The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Natural Science at The University of Texas at Austin and works collaboratively with the Marine Science Advisory Council. The Director holds the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Regents Chair in Marine Science. Qualifications: The successful candidate must be a visionary, creative, entrepreneurial leader with strong external relations and management skills. S/he must be an internationally recognized scientist with a Ph.D. in Marine Science or related field with a strong record of scholarly achievements. The successful candidate must have experience in administration and in supporting development activities, and previous involvement in in the management of large research programs is highly desirable. Candidates may come from academia, not-for-profit organizations, government or the corporate sector. The Director must be willing to travel 20-30 percent of the time, some of which will be day trips. The successful candidate should bring a network of contacts in marine science and for fundraising. As the “face” of the organization, s/he must be a gifted ambassador with excellent communication skills, an individual who can relay compellingly the UTMSI story. The successful candidate will be a consummate diplomat capable of relating to all constituencies –leaders in higher education, legislators, scientists, staff, Advisory Council, local Texas community, institutional partners, funding sources, and global ocean science organizations.
