5-year Postdoc Position (m/f) (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany)
code no. 2012/KS 10

Regional storms and their marine impacts

The Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geestacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a Postdoc Position (m/f) starting at December 1st, 2012 and ending at October 31st, 2017 for the project “Regional storms and their marine impacts”. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at http://www.hzg.de.

This project is part of the Cluster of Excellence “Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction” (CliSAP). The main objectives are the characterization of regional storm (polar lows, typhoons, extra tropical cyclones and medicanes) statistics, the determination of the relationship to driving conditions and of the storms’ impacts. Therefore high-resolution global climate model simulations will be analysed for storms in different geographical regions. This will be done both for the last decades and for future climate scenario
simulations.

This project is collaboration between the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, the University of Hamburg, the German Weather Forecast Service, and the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology. The position is located at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany.

Required qualifications are:
- PhD (or be about to complete) in meteorology/atmospheric physics or in a related scientific
field (e.g., geophysics or Earth system science)
- strong interest in storms and atmospheric dynamics
- experience in a higher programming language
- ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
- experience with atmospheric climate models
- good knowledge of statistics and data analysis
- strong motivation, also to publish results in peer-reviewed journals

We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially
within the framework of legal requirements.

Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2012/KS 10 to Max-Planck- Straße 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or to the e-mail-address: personal@hzg.de. (as single pdf-file including CV and copies of master/diploma university certificates, names of two references, a record of publications, and certificates proving your language skills).
