Postdoc in Ocean Data Assimilation at KAUST

Applications are sought for a postdoctoral position in ocean data assimilation at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). KAUST is a graduate research university located at the Red Sea coast 80 km north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. KAUST employees and students from around the world enjoy western style living campus (

The postdoc will work on developing and implementing advanced data assimilation schemes with high resolution ocean models of Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. The successful applicant will join an established research group at KAUST working on modeling and studying the Saudi Seas, and developing data assimilation systems for analyzes and prediction of their circulation. The group is already running ensemble (DART-MITgcm) and variational (ECCO-MITgcm) based assimilation systems on the KAUST BlueGene supercomputer. The group is collaborating with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas - Austin. The postdoc is expected to spend several weeks per year at one these institutions. The primary responsibilities will involve configuring and running a general circulation ocean model and analyzing their outputs to study the physical oceanography of the region.

Qualified applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, or any closely related field. We are looking for candidates with experience in large scale ocean data assimilation problems. The compensation package includes a competitive tax-free salary; free fully furnished housing including utilities; health care (medical and dental); family annual leave tickets, free international schools, and 4 weeks annual vacation.
