Climate Forecasting Unit, SPECS Project
IC3 Headquarters in Barcelona, Spain
GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
We are looking to recruit a Software Engineer to work in a full-time position for 24 months for the new FP7 project “SPECS” (Seasonal-to-decadal climate Prediction for the improvement of European Climate Services). The successful candidate will work closely with software engineers and scientists both at IC3 and elsewhere to build standard code for encoding dynamical climate predictions to favour data exchange. As a Software Engineer, the candidate will be responsible for develop general-purpose tools to convert climate prediction data into the Climate Model Output Rewriter format (CMOR2) and travel to collaborate with other European climate research institutions.
The Institut Català de Ciències del Clima (Catalan Institute of Climate Sciences, IC3) is a climate institution created by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona, aiming at understanding climate change and variability, the dynamics and theory underlying those changes and the impact on society. The research activity at IC3 focuses on the Mediterranean region, tropical Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. The Climate Forecasting Unit (CFU) undertakes research to forecast global climate variations from one month to several years into the future, also known as seasonal-to-decadal prediction. This unit’s members also investigate the impact of climate variability in socio-economic sectors, and the management of such risk via the development of climate services for renewable energy, insurance, etc. The CFU is involved in one nationally funded project and several projects financed by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Program (FP7).
For further details on IC3 and CFU, please refer to our institutional website http://www.ic3.cat and the wiki site of the Climate Forecasting Unit http://ic3cfu.wikispot.org
